Vrederust Kindergarten
Just outside Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo, you will find the Vrederust Kindergarten. Maryna, Abigail and Trichelle are local Oudtshoorn residents and they manage this pre-school and provide a safe environment for the local children.
Vrederust has children as young as a few months up to the age of around 5/6 years. For a lot of children Vrederust is the place where they learn their first words and numbers, make friends and learn about teamwork for a better outcome in life.
Vegetable garden at the pre-school
One of the first projects of Deeds for their Needs was the sponsorship to set up a vegetable garden. At the school children learn some basic gardening skills and then care of their own pod in the garden. This is done in a fun and creative way. Deeds for their Needs also sponsored and delivered a water tank and gutters for water catchment which helps with irrigation of the garden. The ultimate goal is to use these vegetables for meals prepared at the school – fresh and healthy produce on your plate.
Kitchen and healthy meals
There is huge poverty and unemployment in the area and families often struggle to provide the basic needs for their children. The pre-school aims to provide children with healthy breakfasts and lunches prepared at the school kitchen. Deeds for their Needs sponsored utensils to help set up the kitchen, as well as ongoing sponsorship for food. The meals that they receive, might in some cases be the only meals for the day, so this remains a crucial sponsorship.
Classroom supplies
Illiteracy is a huge problem in the community. Children receive basic education at the school in a nice informal classroom setup. With learning some basic reading and writing skills, we enhance their chances of a better start in life. Deeds for their Needs sponsors stationary, books, carpets, fans, educational wall posters and toys for the classrooms. We try and maintain a fun but also informative classroom environment.
General support
Deeds for their Needs assists wherever we can. We sponsor sanitary supplies as needs arise and assist with general maintenance needs for the school and playground as required. Deeds for their Needs has a strong relationship with Maryna, Abigail and Trichelle who keep us updated with needs and progress.
